People, Planet and Profits - Advocating the Triple Bottom Line

As I look forward to a new year my thoughts naturally turn to the resolutions I will make. Eating healthier, exercising more and being a kinder human being are always on my list each year.

This year I will shape my thoughts and actions around the concept of “People, Planet and Profit.” As a human resources professional I have long espoused familiar themes of “people are our greatest asset leading to greater profitability” without really giving too much thought to our planet assets.

I “give back” to communities with donations, by volunteering and providing pro bono services to several non-profits. It’s time for me to do more.

The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) focuses on how companies commit to social and environmental concerns just as much on profits.

In today's more socially conscious environment, employees, customers, investors and other stakeholders place a premium on working for and spending their money with businesses that prioritize corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Over 500 American companies and 13,000 worldwide have signed the UN Global Compact which sets standards for members “to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption, and take actions that advance societal goals.”

In the decades to come I am committed to advocating for and working with people and companies whose values and actions are aligned with People, Planet and Profits.
